Metropolitan Transit

The freestanding 1,300 square foot bus shelter is located at one of the transit “hubs” in downtown Saint Paul where riders are able to transfer from one bus line to another. THe building is heated and air conditioned and is large enough to accommodate the anticipated foot traffic and transfer traffic for this hub location. The existing bank building site is open at this location, with concrete columns for the upper floors penetrating the space. The new transit building is nestled in between the existing columns to allow ample space on the sidewalk for pedestrians. In order to call attention to the building, to be seen by bus riders, and to provide a playful image, a red canopy over the windows and red accent blocks were incorporated into the design. The red Metro Transit logo was designed into the building interior on the back wall. To provide good visibility for transit users as much glass as possible was included in the design, and the glass was installed at a slight slope to reduce glare.

The adjacent circular planter contained several trees but prevented people cutting across the site at the corner. The planter walls were removed in strategic locations and a brick path was installed. The remaining planter walls make for additional seating under the tree canopy.
